Charlesbank Campus
The Smith Family Pavilion & Charlesbank Campus is a 1.9-acre gateway opening late fall 2026 — a visitor center, café, courts, restrooms, and a riverfront stage, gathered at the edge of the Charles for the first time.
The vision
For all its 64 acres and four million yearly visitors, the Esplanade has never had a true threshold. The Charlesbank Campus changes that — knitting the park's western edge into a welcoming civic commons at the water's line.
Five spaces share the campus: a light-filled visitor center, a riverfront café and terrace, resurfaced multi-use courts, an open Great Lawn, and a covered stage at the water’s edge. Together they answer the everyday questions a great park should — where do I start, where can I sit, where can my kids play, where does the neighborhood gather — without ever charging admission.
Where it sits
The campus anchors the park's western gateway, a short walk from the footbridges over Storrow Drive.

Out on the campus
Four reservable spaces sit out in the open air — free for everyday public use, and bookable by the hour for leagues, classes, performances, and private events. Availability runs through FareHarbor.
Resurfaced courts for pickup games and reservable play — basketball, pickleball, and open recreation.
An open green for picnics, classes, and gatherings — and a permittable space for larger community events.
A flexible performance platform at the water's edge for concerts, classes, and ceremonies.
An indoor room inside the Pavilion for meetings, workshops, and small private events.
